Klezmokum Foundation
& Greene Room

The Klezmokum Foundation was established in 2006 by American jazz pianist Burton Greene.

In the years that followed, many concerts were organized with the support of the Jewish Maror Funds. In June 2021, Burton passed away at the age of 84, and it was his express wish that the foundation continue its musical activities in his spirit. To that end, the foundation’s name and statutes have been amended, and a new location has been rented at Elementenstraat 16 in Amsterdam-West, where Burton’s memory can be kept alive through exhibitions, workshops, living room concerts, and guest performances.

The Sound-Lee! Sextet ventures into the now over 70-year-old repertoire of American alto saxophonist Lee Konitz and his direct kindred spirits—pianists Lennie Tristano and Sal Mosca, and tenor saxophonist Warne Marsh—with open ears.

The emotional detachment of the pieces in this repertoire serves as an ideal source of inspiration for improvising musicians with a love for rhythmic finesse, melodic crosscurrents, and fermenting harmonies.

The musicians seek improvisational solutions much like a tightrope walker who, thrown off balance and on the verge of falling, must creatively find a way to save their performance.

Lee Konitz about the 2003 released CD of the Sound-Lee! Quartet: "They missed the point but made a new one!"
